Roderick

It was already dark when I stepped onto the deck of the ship. I stared up at the full sparkling moon and wondered where Melissa was. She must be making her way through the mythical forest to the fucking Fountain. Kevin was standing beside me. He was staring thoughtfully into the distance, completely unresponsive to my presence.

"Maybe you should dye your hair red, like that bard." I asked, trying to get his attention.

"Yes, I suppose I could." the squire nodded, but suddenly he faltered. "What hair?"

"You seem to be dreaming of faraway lands." I said, clapping my friend on the shoulder. "Or you're in love."

Kevin blew a strand of his blond hair off his forehead and said.

"No, you're imagining things."

"Don't make me look like an idiot. When I saw Melissa, I couldn't get my head together for days. And I was lucky she noticed my longing looks and invited me into her quarters." I added. "So I know the object of your admiration?"

"Yes." Kevin whispered. "But she's interested in someone else."

Of course, I didn't realize that. Vanessa was always hanging around Kevin, trying to sink her fangs into him. Even though my squire grumbled, he must have enjoyed her presence. But Edwin was the vampire's clear favorite.

"What can I say? You might try talking to her. I don't think your girlfriend is particularly interested in your rival." I said.

"You don't understand."

"Believe me, I do." I said flatly.

The fog had descended ahead, but even through it I could see the glittering shores of the Siren Islands. It was the main reason ships avoided this place. As soon as they sailed within a few meters of any of the three islands, the beautiful but cruel sirens would ruin sailors with their songs. They would lure them to them, caress them and kill them, taking their life force.

A lump rose to my throat and I swallowed nervously. All my senses begged me to turn back, but I couldn't. For Melissa's sake, for the king's sake. It's my duty! If only Trent's card would work.

The merchantman stepped onto the deck and looked blankly around the Siren Islands.

"Oh, here come the lovely but cold creatures. If only I could catch one for the king's personal aquarium." he said dreamily.

"Are you out of your mind? It's dangerous to go near them, and you want to catch one?" I was indignant. "Sometimes it seems to me that for more money, you're ready to shove Archmage's staff up your ass."

Trent shrugged and grinned.

"Very witty! And you're willing to wear armor all day long for money and risk your life in battle."

"I do it for my honor! I do my duty to the kingdom and a wretched worm like you knows nothing about it!" I was outraged.

"Of course, I'm just a miserable merchant who sells overpriced water to fish." Trent joked and headed for the captain. "Prepare to work the oars, sire."
